However, Haye is going to have to let go of that dream if he wants the honor of being able to fight the best heavyweight in the world.

There’s no way that Wladimir or his brother World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko are going to travel to the UK to fight a heavyweight with as little experience at the heavyweight level that Haye has going for him. Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy Promotions seems to be okay with the Haye-Klitschko fight talking place in Vegas.

In an article at the Telegraph.co.uk, De La Hoya said “This is a fight the world wants to see, and which boxing really needs. It is a huge fight, and if we can get the money right, I see no reason why it could not happen in Las Vegas, the world’s fight capital.”

De La Hoya is correct. Vegas is the only place for the Haye vs. Wladimir fight. HBO wants the fight to take place in the U.S. in order to attract more fans for the bout, and that can’t happen if the fight takes place over in England because of the different time zones involved.

But before the venue for the bout can be selected, the two fighters need to successfully negotiate. Normally, it would be a simple case of splitting the money 50-50 and making the fight. However, the television money is what will make the negotiations complicated. The Klitschkos want all the money including Haye’s British pay-per-view money thrown into the pot and in the past he’s seemed reluctant to do so. Bernd Boente, the manager for the Klitschkos, says there is no fight unless it’s 50-50 with all the money tossed into the pot. It’s up to Haye and his manager/trainer Adam Booth if they want to get the bigger payday by fighting Wladimir at a 50-50 deal or if they want to continue to milk the WBA title against less popular heavyweights.
