Image: Fury says Haye is the weakest champion, and wants to fight himBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (12-0, 9 KO’s) continues his upward climb up the heavyweight ladder this Saturday night against 37-year-old Zack Page (21-32-2, 7 KO’s) in an eight round bout on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Jean Pascal fight card at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Fury, 22, wants to fight WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in the near future, and sees Haye as the weak link on the heavyweight food chain among champions.

In an article at the Manchester Evening News, Fury said “I need a few more fights, but I’m on Haye’s tail. He’s the one I’m thinking of because he’s the weakest champion. I’m big. I’ve got the heart of a champion. I’m fast and I’ve got good power. I don’t think he’d stand a chance. I’m not scared of him.“

Fury should know about how the Klitschkos and Haye are because Fury has sparred with Wladimir recently when Wladimir was getting ready for his now canceled fight with Dereck Chisora. Fury worked out with Wladimir and his trainer Emanuel Steward for several weeks. It’s thought that Steward could really assist in helping Fury’s career if he were to become his full time trainer.

It’s unknown that will ever happen, but in the meantime, it’s going to be interesting to see how much Fury learned from the short time he spent training with Steward and Wladimir. As for Fury fighting Haye someday, it’s not likely to happen unless Haye decides on staging a comeback after he retires next year in October.

Who knows? Haye could decide to come back if he sees Fury making a big name for himself in the UK in the coming years, but Fury will have to make a lot of progress for that to happen. Thus far, Fury has looked badly flawed in fights against fighters like John McDermott.

Still speaking about Haye, Fury said “The fight with [Audley] Harrison was terrible. But Haye was as scared as Harrison to throw a punch. He is terrified of a big man. Any big man who isn’t scared of Haye will give him problems. But Haye had him beat before they went in…If it had been me, I’d have been right into Haye.”

Fury certainly couldn’t have done any worse than Harrison, that’s for sure. Harrison only threw one punch during the entire three rounds of the fight.
