By Jason Kim: It’s looking like WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is going to be facing 37-year-old former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga on March 12th in a pay per view fight.

According to the latest boxing news, they’re putting a fight together between these two guys for what could a somewhat interested fight if Mayorga has anything left after all these years as a pro.

He didn’t look at that great in beating Michael Walker by a 7th round stoppage on 12/17. Mayorga’s defense was missing and he looked overweight. Bob Arm, the promoter for Cotto, doesn’t want to have Cotto get beat before he fights Antonio Margarito and a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

He wasn’t going to put him in with anyone really good at this point with those fights on the horizon. However, I don’t how Mayorga-Cotto will interest fans. It’s a decent fight but not PPV material in my view. Mayorga hasn’t been all that active and was stopped in the 12th round in his fight before the Walker bout two years ago against Shane Mosley.

Mayorga didn’t look good then, and he looks worse now. Mayorga is a still a name for hardcore fans to recognize, so some fans might be willing to purchase this fight despite it looking like a mismatch.

Cotto really needs to start beating some quality fighters again. It’s been awhile since he beat a really good fighter. Arum matched Cotto against Yuri Foreman, but that guy had never really proven himself against big stars and he fell apart once Cotto put a little pressure.
