Carl Froch: The unsung champion

Image: Carl Froch: The unsung championBy Dallan o’ Donnell: A humble man from Nottingham, England, Carl Froch is currently the least talked about world champion Britain has. An amazingly talented fighter, an all out warrior in the ring, never in a dull or boring fight and yet he hasn’t managed to crack the main broadcaster of pay per view events in Britain, Sky.

Can we fixate all the blame on his promoter Mick Hennessy? Or is there more Sky could be doing to bring Froch to the big screen so to say and allow him to start making the kind of money a world champion should be making.

It was reported Froch made less in his last fight with Arthur Abraham than Audley Harrison did for his fight with David Haye. That statement is both shocking and ridiculous. In his post fight interview he said himself that he hopes one day British television would show one of his fights.

I can’t agree more, he should be on major broadcaster instead of him being on a pay per view channel nobody has heard of. We currently pay for Amir Khan and David Haye and in the past have shelled out on such legendary British boxers like Ricky Hatton and Lennox Lewis, and in my opinion the public would attain a much more exciting fight if we were to pay for a Carl Froch fight on Sky.

His style is reminiscing of the great heavyweight Rocky Marciano in the way he moves his body, gets in close and throws his uppercuts with bite. He constantly comes forward and has a chin made of granite. Only beaten once in his career, a unanimous decision loss to Mikkel Kessler in Denmark, (Kessler’s home country where he is an idol). Froch thought it was a home town decision, I share that opinion.

So for British fight fans across the UK and Ireland I hope Sky purchase his next fight against Glen Johnson, a semi final of the super six tournament which will either be held in Nottingham or Las Vegas.

Even if it is not shown on pay per view, it will allow Froch to have some exposure in the UK to accumulate more fans to the army of supporters he already has. It would be a far better watch than another David Haye bout.
