It would be a mismatch”Photo Naoki Fukuda: By Chris Williams: As Yahoo News writer Kevin Iole so expertly pointed out in his superb column today, World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sergio Martinez’s one-punch knockout win over Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KO’s) last Saturday night may have removed any possibility of getting a fight with Manny Pacquiao in the future. I have to say that Iole is so right about this.

That sensational knockout win was like a giant scarecrow that will chase away any chance that Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum of taking on Martinez. Even with the most weight draining of catch weights working for him, I can’t see Pacquiao showing any interest in fighting Martinez, despite the fact that he’s actually shorter and smaller than Pacquiao’s last opponent Antonio Margarito.

This isn’t about size, it’s about power and skills. Martinez has a lot of both of those qualities, whereas Margarito comes up short in those areas.

Martinez scoffed at the idea of fighting Pacquiao after his win over Williams on Saturday, saying “Pacquiao is too small. It would be a mismatch.” Yes, maybe Martinez is right. Maybe Pacquiao is too small, even with a catch weight handicap working for him. But how is it that Pacquiao was big enough to beat Margarito, a taller and heavier fighter than Martinez.

I think Martinez needs to consider the fight. It would be good for boxing to have Pacquiao take on Martinez. At least if he lost to him there would be the built in excuse that he was facing a bigger guy. If Pacquiao loses to 39-year-old Shane Mosley, his likely next opponent, he’s going to get raked over the coals because many people see Mosley as shot and he’s not much bigger than Pacquiao. Heck, Manny might as well fight Martinez and go out on his shield.
