Image: Sergio Martinez - 2010 Fighter of the Year and Boxing's #1 Pound for Pound fighterBy Dave Lahr: You can forget about Manny Pacquiao being the 2010 Fighter of the Year, because WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) cemented that title in my eyes with his outstanding 2nd round knockout of Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KO’s) last night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Martinez, who lost an incredibly controversial 12 round majority decision to Williams last year in December and before that had a knockout win taken away from him by a referee in his 12 round draw with Kermit Cintron, proved that he’s the best fighter in boxing with the Williams victory.

For me, Martinez’s wins over Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik puts him in the driver’s seat for the 2010 Fighter of the Year. I’m sorry to break the news to Pacquiao fans, but beating Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito doesn’t compare to Martinez’s wins over Pavlik and Williams. There’s no comparison between them. Clottey fights Pacquiao while coming off a loss to Miguel Cotto, and Margarito takes on Pacquiao after getting whipped by Shane Mosley last year.

Okay, so besides the 2010 Fighter of the Year award, which I feel should rightly go to Martinez, I think he should be boxing’s new Pound-for-Pound #1 fighter. I took a glance at Michael Marley’s list and I was greatly disappointed at who he had at the top position.

Here’s my top 10 Pound-for-Pound list:

#1 Sergio Martinez
#2 Floyd Mayweather Jr.
#3 Timothy Bradley
#4 Andre Ward
#5 Lucian Bute
#6 Juan Manuel Marquez
#7 Yuriorkis Gamboa
#8 David Haye
#9 Celestino Caballero
#10 Fernando Montiel

I’m sorry but Pacquiao make the list because of too many catch weight fights in the past year, and fact that many of his recent opponents have been coming off terrible beatings at the time he fought them. Maybe if Pacquiao ditches the catch weight fights, takes on Martinez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Bradley and James Kirkland, without a catch weight, he can make it to my number #1 pound for pound list. As it is, he didn’t make the cut.
