Pacquaio vs. Martinez: When does Pacquaio become too small?

By Boxing News - 11/22/2010 - Comments

By Dallan o’ Donnell: Standing a mere 5 foot 6 inches tall Manny “Pac-man” Pacquaio (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) has risen through weight classes beating everyone put in front of him, no matter how big they may have been. He is an 8 time world champion and won titles in 5 different weight classes with some boxing analysts, journalists and amateur writers including yours truly considering him now to be an all time great.

But when does camp Pacquaio finally say enough is enough in terms of bigger opponents? After his 12 round destruction of Antonio Margarito, incredibly at light middleweight, we have been left awe inspired that someone as small in size could bully a naturally heavier man in his natural weight division. And now after Argentine Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) knocked Paul Williams out in just 2 rounds there have been calls for a bout between Pacquaio and Martinez.

It is not possible for this fight to happen at middleweight so Martinez would have to come down in weight to take the fight but after rehydrating he would, like Margarito, enter the ring weighing much more than Pacquaio. Is a Martinez fight a step too far for the pound for pound king? No it is not.

Martinez stands 5 foot 10 inches, not a whole lot taller than Manny, and although he weighs more than Manny he would not be able to beat him by using bullying tactics that saw Margarito take the worst beating of his career. Every boxer will have their critics, including Pacquaio, but he keeps proving them wrong time and time again by dazzling in the ring with super human hand speed and incredible foot and body movement.

If this fight was to happen it would more than likely be at another catch weight maybe 150 pounds or less. Pacquaio said himself he would fight twice more, a fight with 35 year old Martinez and then a super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.(41-0-0,25 KO’s) could be on the horizon for 2011. It would be the perfect way to go into retirement as possibly the greatest fighter of all time.
