Audley Harrison says he’s going to “reflect” about whether to continue his career

By Sean McDaniel: After getting blown out by WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in a 3rd round TKO on Saturday night, Audley Harrison (27-5, 20 KO’s) says “I’ve got to sit down and reflect” on what to do next with his career. Harrison, 39, was never competitive in the fight against Haye, and seemed to freeze completely to the point where he failed to let his hands go. It might have been too much of a high pressure situation for Harrison to adequately perform to the best of his ability.

Harrison looked nothing like the heavyweight that won the Prizefighter tournament last year, because instead of attacking Haye like he did the heavyweights in that tournament, Harrison merely stood there. Haye did nothing until the 3rd round when he hit Harrison with a big right hand and then followed up with a barrage of punches as Harrison stood with his back against the ropes just covering up. Harrison went down after getting hit with three short clubbing shots with one of them appearing to hit him in the back of the head. After getting up, Harrison was hit with a number of hard shots without once responding with any punches in self defense. Referee Luis Pabon then stepped in and halted the fight at 1:23 of the round with Harrison staggering slightly and looking as if he were ready to go down if he were hit a few more times by Haye.

If Harrison doesn’t retire, he’s going to have to face limited opposition if he wants to get back on the winning track. Harrison doesn’t seem to have the ability to compete with the better heavyweights in the division. He may have good power but he freezes at the wrong moments and ruins his chances.
