What if boxers did not have a nationality?

By Gerardo Granados: Many times I´ve read in different forums or blogs people bragging about certain boxer because he is a natural born from the same country; I could give you numerous examples but I think you have an idea of what I mean. First they exalt the qualities and virtues of the “X” boxer, later on they argue he is the best, in respond someone argues that his fellow country man (“Y” boxer) is much better than the first one, and in most cases start insulting the “X” boxer or the other person. At the end both make comments minimizing or insulting the other citizens, making ignorant racial tainted arguments.

In my opinion, a boxer is a boxer, no matter where he was born. Boxing fans don’t follow a boxer because he is their countryman exclusively, boxing fans enjoy watching a good boxer, and they don’t mind if he is foreign to their country. Yet there is “pride” to know that your countryman is a great boxer. Can you imagine not admiring boxing greats because of their nationality? That would be absurd, just as absurd as the allegations made by this few “boxing fans”.

A boxer train, fight, gets hurt, make money, and squander his money the same way all over the world. Boxing fans all over the world enjoy watching skilled, aggressive, granite chinned, power punchers, the ones that are defensively masters or the ones that always go forward no matter what. Personally I don’t care if my favorite boxer isn’t my countryman, or even if he beats a fellow countryman boxer, yeah sure when a countryman boxer does good I will be glad. I prefer not to assign nationalities to any boxer, because I like his fighting style no matter where he was born. Perhaps we all should learn to respect different opinions.

If you want to cheer for your country go to the Olympics and the World Baseball Classic! Or even to the FIFA World Cup. At the end it is only a sport.
