The Pacquiao-Margarito winner will have pressure to fight the Martinez-Williams II winner

By Chris Williams: Whoever emerges as the victor in the November 13th bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, you can bet that HBO is going to be very interested in matching hem up with the winner of the November 20th rematch between Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams. Think about it.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. unavailable to fight for one reason or another, there’s really no one else for Pacquiao and/or Margarito to fight. Boxing fans don’t want to see Pacquiao fight Miguel Cotto again because their previous fight was so one-sided with Pacquiao easily beating Cotto.

Trying to sell that fight again would be a big mistake unless Bob Arum was okay with getting less than 700,000 pay per view buys. There would no suspense involved because Cotto hasn’t really beaten anyone to make you think the outcome would be changed the second time around.

Although a fight between Cotto and Margarito would be a decent fight, it won’t be a huge fight and unless he beats Pacquiao next month, his star could be even dimmer than it is now. But the winner of the Williams vs. Martinez fight would be the ideal choice for Pacquiao or Margarito to fight.

Margarito already fought both Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams during his career, beating Martinez by a 7th round stoppage in 2000 and losing a close 12 round decision to Williams in 2007. Pacquiao vs. Williams would be a great fight due to the size differences and Williams high work rate. He would force Pacquiao to fight hard for 12 rounds or else he’d take a beating.

Martinez vs. Pacquiao would be a great fight because Martinez would make Pacquiao have to prove that he can beat fighter that moves. Pacquiao has been fed almost exclusively stationary fighters since his controversial 12 round split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez in 2008. Pacquiao would be facing a real threat of getting out-boxed by Martinez. It still be an exciting fight to see how Pacquiao adjusts – or doesn’t adjust – to Martinez’s movement and slashing attacks.

It would take a lot for Arum to say yes to this fight because he would be taking a big risk because Williams and Martinez can both still fight. They’re not shot, weight drained and haven’t recently been destroyed. Things could be different after their November 20th fight, but I still see the winner of that fight being able to put in a good fight against Pacquiao or Margarito.
