Pacquiao voted WBO Fighter of the Year?

By Dave Lahr: The World Boxing Organization has decided to give Manny Pacquiao the Fighter of the Year for 2010, and I don’t have a clue why. Thus far, Pacquiao has beaten Joshua Clottey in one of the most boring fights I can remember ever seeing in March. Pacquiao hasn’t even finished the year, and he’s going to take a vicious beating from Antonio Margarito on November 13th.

How is that going to make the WBO look when Pacquiao gets ripped to pieces by the proud Mexican warrior? Man, what kind of an award is this? The year isn’t even finished and they’re already shoving it down Pacquiao’s throat.

If they’re going to be giving away an award, they should at least wait until the year is about finished, shouldn’t they? I personally think Juan Manuel Marquez should get the Fighter of the Year award for his win over Juan Diaz. At least Diaz came to fight and was throwing punches back at Marquez.

Also, Marquez looked a lot better in that fight in my estimation than the way Pacquiao did in beating Clottey. Pacquiao was throwing arm punches to increase his punch volume and mostly just hitting gloves all night long.

Pacquiao’s punch connect percentage was anemic for that fight. He looked awful like he was fighting with his eyes closed. How can the WBO see the Pacquiao-Clottey fight and then call Pacquiao the Fighter of the Year? Give it to Marquez or Juan Manuel Lopez. I really liked the way Lopez looked in wiping out Bernabe Concepcion in two fast paced rounds in July of this year. That fight was much more impressive than Pacquiao’s win over Clottey.

Besides, Pacquiao is going to get his back side handed to him by Margarito and will finish 2010 with a 1-1 record. That isn’t a Fighter of the Year in my book.

I can just see Pacquiao showing up black and blue, lips busted, eyes cut, teeth missing at the WBO’s headquarters to pick up his award after losing to Margarito. He should just then turn around and give the award to Margarito for his wins over Roberto Garcia and Pacquiao.
