Will HBO show Mosley’s next fight on their network?

Image: Will HBO show Mosley’s next fight on their network?By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) is no doubt headed for the Boxing Hall of Fame at some point in the future after he retires from the sport. During his prime, Mosley was perhaps the best fighter in all of boxing for a short window of time. However, the fact of the matter is Mosley is not looking good recently and hasn’t impressed in his last two fights – a lopsided 12 round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a 12 round draw with Sergio Mora.

The question is whether HBO will opt to still show Mosley’s next fight if it’s the main event? It’s hard to imagine seeing Mosley on an undercard of fight, but I think that may be his best bet if he wants to be still seen by HBO. If I’m a network executive, I think I might opt to not agree to having Mosley on the card, even if it’s on the undercard because he hasn’t been looking good at all. You’d have to expect that if Mosley wasn’t going to be on the main event of his next fight, he’d be in the co-main event at the minimum.

I wouldn’t be okay with that if I was an executive because Mosley looks shot to me. I can excuse Mosley for looking terrible against Mayweather, but in seeing Mosley look just as poor in his fight against Mora, I can only think that he’s a shot fighter. I know Evander Holyfield has continued to be shown on cable despite looking worse and worse over the years, but in these lean times with the networks, they’re trying to get the most for their money with each fight card. I don’t know if they would be okay with having the potential of another Mosley stinker against somebody.

I guess if Mosley were to be buried deep on one of the cards, like in the first bout of a larger card, I can see having him shown on HBO. But that’s about it. I think Mosley needs to start over and prove that he can still win. If he can beat some top guys and show that he still has it, I would think it would be okay for him to be shown on HBO. Right now, though, I think Mosley needs to earn his way back onto television by beating a live body and showing that he’s not shot.

With Mosley having 1 loss and 1 draw in his last two fights, that’s just not good enough for me to feel comfortable about him fighting on a major card unless it wasn’t going to be shown on television.
