Mosley receives gift draw with Mora

Image: Mosley receives gift draw with MoraBy Chris Williams: Shane Mosley dodged an almost certain loss tonight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, when the judges gave him a 12 round draw against former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora. However, Mosley looked totally shot throughout the 12 round bout and appeared, at least to me, to have lost the fight 9 rounds to 3. The judges’ scored it 116-112 for Mosley, 115-113 for Mora, and 114-114.

I thought Mosley did enough to win the first couple of rounds and the final round, but that’s about it. Mosley just looked shot, slow and unable to pull the trigger with his punches. I never expected Mosley to lose the fight if it was close, but this wasn’t a particularly close fight. It’s nice to be the more popular fighter, I suppose. This fight kind of reminds me of the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Felix Sturm bout years ago. De La Hoya won the fight, even though he appeared to have lost almost every round against the less popular Sturm. That win for De La Hoya set up a big money fight between De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins. Mosley appeared to have lost almost every round except for the 12th in the second half of the fight and didn’t have a clue what to do against Mora.

owever, Mosley, the more popular fighter, was able to be spared a defeat by the judges. But the draw pretty much ruins Mosley’s chances of getting a fight with Manny Pacquiao in the future. I say “probably” because a poor performance or a loss doesn’t seem to disqualify fighters for fights against Pacquiao. We could still see Mosley in against Pacquiao in what would likely be a terrible looking fight. Heck, Mosley may get selected for Pacquiao just because he looked so terrible.
