Image: Enzo Maccarinelli - Not the ending he deservedBy Shaun Campbell: Firstly, I am one of many people who is a fan of Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli. He is truly one of boxing’s nice guys. In a sport where so many world champions feel the need to disrespect each other, or enjoy the good life a little too much, the past 11 years have been a refreshing change as Maccarinelli has given British fight fans so many wonderful nights. The former WBO cruiserweight champion, was brutally knocked out after being ahead in his last fight Saturday night against Alexander Frenkel. He is now considering his future.

“Big Mac” as he was also known was always keen to please his fans, and instead of opting for the Klitchko tactic (safety first), Enzo would always go full steam ahead which unfortunately cost him against fighters like Frenkel and David Haye. The most sickening part of the fight however was that he was allowed to continue after the first knockdown. Whatever people may say about the Welshman’s chin, that shot would have floored a horse. But for reasons still unclear to most of the people watching who saw the fight, the referee and Enzo’s corner allowed him to bravely get to his feet and carry on. David Haye is said to be “sickened” by the referee’s decision to let the fight keep going. He was left on the canvas for around 5 minutes as he couldn’t make it to his feet. Eventually he bravely got up to the roar of the crowd, who were just pleased to see that he was OK.

It was a shame to see a man that gave so much to the sport possibly bow out like that. It was not what he deserved. Enzo is a man who has always seemed to do everything right, yet end up getting it wrong. Jim Watt who was ringside saturday night seemed genuinly saddened by the way Maccarinelli was knocked out. Frank Warren has also shown compassion for Maccarinelli and offered him the opportunity to join his promotional team, which will see Enzo based promoting fights in his homeland Wales. Hopefully we do not see Maccarinelli in the ring fighting again because he has suffered some heavy knock downs, but as was the case with many fighters, we will surely support him no matter what he chooses.
