By Scott Gilfoid: Former World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) spoke of retirement should he lose to Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) in their stage 3 Super Six tourney fight on October 2nd, in Monaco. Froch, 33, also talked wanting to try and break Abraham’s ribs if he uses his high guard defense against him.
In an article at the Sundaymercury.net, Froch said “I have the champion mentality and I know I should beat Abraham., He sites back and has a high European guard with his hands held high. If he does that then I will try to break his ribs.”
I’m disappointed. I was hoping Froch would say “I will break his ribs” rather than saying he’s just going to try to break them. Froch went on to mention that he’s been training for five weeks already and plans on training for 12 rounds in total.
I think Froch may be overdoing it a tad bit. He’s going to work himself away to skin and bones. This is what I thought would happen when he signed on for this fight. Knowing how powerful Abraham is and how could destroy Froch if he lands one of his huge sledgehammer shots, I had a feeling that Froch would train like mad for this fight.
I just hope Froch doesn’t overdo it, because I want him to be around for the semifinals so that Andre Dirrell can avenge his controversial 12 round decision loss to Froch.
Speaking about Abraham, Froch said “I will beat Abraham and go through to the semis…But I am a winner. I don’t think of anything else but winning and if I am not doing that then I don’t want to be involved. My only defeat has been to Mikkel Kessler on a unanimous decision in his home town of Denmark. I thought I had done enough to win or at least get a draw but they wouldn’t give it to me.”
I hate to break this to Froch, but the reason why he didn’t get the decision was because he got beat by a better fighter on that night. Froch fought too passively, then got lazy and/or tired in the middle rounds and then didn’t do enough in the later rounds to pull out the decision. Froch only has one person to blame and that’s himself for not working harder in the middle rounds of the fight.
He could have easily beaten Kessler had he kept his offense in high gear instead of sitting back and letting Kessler come to him. I don’t know of too many people that think Froch won the Kessler fight. As far as I’m concerned, Froch is 0-2 in the Super Six tournament and needs some serious changes if he wants to avoid getting eliminated by Abraham.
I think Froch is going to get knocked cold, but maybe if he studies Dirrell’s win over Abraham really hard, Froch can somehow imitate Dirrell enough to get a close win. That should be Froch’s main goal for this fight.
And as for Froch hinting about retirement should be lose to Abraham, I don’t believe it for a second. He’ll keep plugging along, and probably end up moving up to the light heavyweight division so he can fight Jean Pascal again for why, I have no idea. A better idea would be rematches with Dirrell, Jermain Taylor and Kessler.
