By Eric Thomas: For those fans that are thinking that they’ve seen the last of Bad Chad Dawson after his 11 round technical decision loss to WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal tonight, think again. Dawson, 28, was clever enough to have a rematch clause in his contract with Pascal, meaning that the two fighters will be getting it on again in the near future so that they can clear up the controversy that surrounded tonight’s fight in Montreal, Canada. For those who may have missed the fight, Dawson held back with his offense, letting Pascal pile on the rounds for the most part until the 10th round.
At that time, Dawson finally showed his talent when he began to unload on a shocked looking Pascal. Dawson would batter Pascal in the 10th, and then in the 11th round had Pascal teetering on the verge of being knocked out when Pascal turned his head into Dawson and opened up a beauty of a cut over the eyelid of Dawson. The head butt was accidental, but the timing of the head butt couldn’t have come at a better time with Pascal on the verge of being knocked out.
It was one of those Rocky type moments where a fighter comes through with something to save themselves at the last second. It’s just too bad that it was a head butt and not something more heroic like a knockout punch, because Pascal looked totally ready to go when that head butt materialized out of nowhere to stop Dawson dead in his tracks. A rematch will definitely clear things up for boxing fans who were left frustrated and angry at how the fight ended. I thought the referee pulled the plug much too quickly. Had he let Dawson fight it out for the remainder of the fight, I think he would have stopped Pascal with a flurry of shots even though Dawson had blood streaming down his face from the nasty head butt.
Pascal looked good by default in the earlier rounds, because Dawson seemed to be holding back his fireworks for later. It looked like he had a grand plan of opening up later in the fight to try and take Pascal out, which is exactly what Dawson was in the process of doing when the head butt occurred.
