By Jim Dower: Junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (19-1, 16 KO’s)has turned down a reported $750,000 to fight World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, according to Steve Kim at maxboxing.com. Angulo, 28, wanted $1 million to fight Martinez and wasn’t satisfied with the $750,000. Gary Shaw, Angulo’s promoter, was all for the Angulo-Martinez fight and thought it would have been a “great opportunity” for him. Now, however, Angulo likely won’t be seen for the rest of the year on HBO, because their schedule is booked with fighters from other promotional companies. There was only that one small window for Angulo to fight and unfortunately he passed up on his opportunity.

Angulo missed out on a big opportunity, because the seven hundred and fifty thousand would have been the biggest payday of Angulo’s career. It’s hard to understand why he would not take the fight when he’s never got that kind of money before in the past. It could be that Angulo was afraid he couldn’t win the fight and by asking for more money than they’re willing to give, Angulo could be showing that he doesn’t want to fight Martinez. It’s hard to see Angulo winning that fight, because last year Angulo was easily beaten by Kermit Cintron, who isn’t nearly as good a boxer as Martinez.

Shaw had this to say about the Angulo-Martinez non-fight: “I believe Perro beats Sergio Martienz with all his pressure. I’m probably in the minority, but that’s what I really believe. Plus, he has a chance to win the middleweight title of the world. HBO was guaranteeing him reappearance if he lost on HBO. And the WBC was not going to penalize him and he’d still be the number one at 154.” That’s pretty impressive. What was Angulo thinking when he said no to that offer? Angulo may wish he had accepted the offer at some point in his career.
