Margarito will attempt to get another meeting with the Nevada Athletic Commission

By Chris Williams: Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) was recently rejected by a 4-1 vote by the Nevada Athletic Commission in his efforts to try and get his boxing license back in the United States. The Nevada Commission advised Margarito to go back to the California Athletic Commission, who previously revoked Margarito’s license last year, and try to have them give it back to Margarito. According to Michael Marley at Examiner.com, Arum said that one of his lawyers attempted to get Margarito’s case put on the July 26th meeting of the California Athletic Commission.

However, they couldn’t fit him in for this meeting. Arum said “They wouldn’t allow it. They said they did not have room for it, so we’ve gone back to Nevada with this information and they can all a meeting on three days’ notice, so that’s what we’re now asking. California said they couldn’t fit us in so we return to Nevada.” I don’t like the way this looks. If Nevada voted it down before, telling both Arum and Margarito to take it up before the California Athletic Commission, chances are they will say the same thing.

This is a touchy matter. I can see where Arum is coming from. He wants to work quickly to try and get Margarito licensed in time for him to fight Manny Pacquiao by November 13th. Arum, ideally, would like for the fight to take place in the United States, possibly in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, if the California Athletic Commission can’t squeeze Margarito’s case in their next meeting, the Nevada Athletic Commission might not change their stance on this and could end up telling Arum and Margarito to again take this matter up with the California Commission.

If Margarito can’t get in the July meeting, he may need to try again in August. That’s probably what the Nevada Athletic Commission will tell them. Sometimes these things aren’t solved in a hurry, and take time. When you’re dealing with fighters like Margarito, who had his boxing license revoked due to a plaster-like substance being discovered on his hand wraps before his January 2009 fight against Shane Mosley, it probably is going to take some time before the decide to meet with Margarito and give him his boxing license back. Just because Arum and Margarito are in a hurry to get this matter settled, doesn’t mean that the California Commission will speed up his case and make it quick for him.

If things down work out to his liking, Arum is considering matching Margarito up with Pacquiao in either Mexico or the Middle East somewhere. Arum isn’t used to not getting his way, so if Margarito gets rejected again by another Athletic Commission, Arum will likely go ahead anyway and match Margarito up with Pacquiao outside of the U.S. The ones that will lose out on this will be American boxing fans, because many of them won’t be able to afford to travel all the way to Mexico to see the Pacquiao-Margarito fight.
