Froch-Abraham to take place in Monaco

By William Mackay: Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) got his wish on Thursday by having his stage 3 Super Six tournament fight against Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) take place in Monaco, a neutral venue on October 3rd. Whether it means anything remains to be seen, because Froch for some reason thinks he was ripped off in his last Super Six fight against Mikkel Kessler. Froch lost that fight by a 12 round decision, but Froch thinks he would have won the fight had it taken place in his home city of Nottingham, England.

It’s too bad few other people agree with Froch. After the loss to Kessler, Froch learned that his fight against Abraham would be in Germany instead of Nottingham. Froch his blew his gasket, and said no way, he wasn’t going to be fighting in Germany, because he thought he couldn’t win a decision there. After going back and forth with Abraham’s promoter, Sauerland Events, for a couple of months, a venue was finally decided. Having the fight take place in Monaco will likely ensure that few of Froch or Abraham’s fans show up.

It’s next to France it’s going to take some traveling for Froch and Abraham’s fans to get there. I’m sure Froch’s main concern is just getting the win, but I think he would like a good turn as well for the fight. I think there’s not going to be a lot of Froch’s fans willing to travel all the way to Monaco to see him fight. I could be wrong, but that’s kind of far and in this economy, I think a lot of fans will opt to stay home and purchase the fight on pay-per-view.

Froch, confident as always, says “I’m training hard already for King Arthur. Make no mistake about it, I fully appreciate the threat that Abraham presents to me in this fight. Whenever two warriors go into battle there will be bloodshed. But there will be only one victor in Monaco and that will be the Cobra.” I wish I could agree with Froch. I think he’s going to get torn apart and knocked clean out by Abraham.

Froch, with his hands dropping down by his waste like usual, is going to have Abraham’s gloves tattooed to his head all night, except this fight won’t go all night. Abraham will have Froch stretched out on the canvas counting stars before long. I suspect Abraham will catch up to Froch by the 5th round. That’ll be it. I can’t see this fight going any longer than that unless Froch turns tail and runs from Abraham to try and survive.

Since I’ve never seen Froch run before in any of his fights, he’s probably going to go down swinging. It sounds heroic but in this case I think it will be a foolish game plan for Froch, because with a power puncher like Abraham, you have to find ways to keep him from landing his thunderous shots. Froch will probably be crazy enough to trade with Abraham and will end up spitting teeth.
