Koncz has “positive meeting” with Cotto

By Chris Williams: Michael Koncz, the personal adviser for Manny Pacquiao, has reportedly had a successful meeting with World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto about a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao if the fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. can’t be made for November of this year. According to writer Ronnie Nathanielsz of philboxing.com, Koncz, speaking about his meeting with Cotto, described it as a “Very positive meeting.”

Cotto, of course, would like noting better than to try and get a rematch with Pacquiao after being beaten up and stopped last year in a 12th round knockout in November. Unlike Cotto’s earlier 11th round knockout loss to Antonio Margarito in 2008, which close until Cotto got hurt late in the 10th, the loss to Pacquiao was hopelessly one-sided.

Cotto never stood a chance, and probably still doesn’t have a change in hell in winning a second, third or fourth fight. However many times that Pacquiao and Cotto’s mutual trainer Bob Arum wants to match them together, it’s reasonable to assume that Cotto won’t have of any chance to win.

This fight is more for the fans of Cotto and Pacquiao rather than for casual fans because there’s not much of a selling point. Cotto hasn’t anything to redeem himself after the Pacquiao loss, other than beating another one of Arum’s fighters Yuri Foreman, who has no power and had a bad leg when Cotto fought him.

It’s too bad there isn’t someone new and interesting for Pacquiao fight, someone that hasn’t been beaten in their last two fights. That would pretty much rule out both Cotto and Margarito, because both have suffered one loss a piece in their past two fights. Pacquiao needs to be matched at least with guys like Andre Berto, Sergio Martinez, or Paul Williams.

Maybe even Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander. Any one of those fighters would be some new blood and someone that I feel would have at least a chance at winning. I dont’ give Cotto any chance at beating Pacquiao, and he didn’t all that impressive in his recent win over Foreman.

And Margarito would be far too slow to do anything against Pacquiao other than getting knocked out. Margarito needs to build his way back up the boxing ladder and try to reestablish himself before getting a big fight like Pacquiao. That sends a wrong message to match Margarito in a big title fight against Pacquiao after all that’s happened in the past year.
