Hometown favorite Alex Perez wins unanimous decision over Edvan Barros in 8

By Sam Gregory: In the opening bout of the July 16th edition of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights from the Prudential Center, Newark, N.J. undefeated Alex Perez 12-0 with 7 KO’s takes on Edvan Barros 10-10-1 with 7 KO’s in a scheduled 8 round bout in the welterweight division.

n round 1 both man came out using their jab testing their opponent; Perez landed a solid right hand early on. Barros had Perez on the ropes mid way through the round but Perez punches out and they finished the round in the center of the ring exchanging jabs, Perez’ round

Round 2 Perez came out hard and fast to start the round; the southpaw Perez was able to keep Barros off balance through most of the round. Barros grabbed and held onto Perez until Perez was able to punch out and take control of the round. Barros finished strong landing two solid right hooks.

In round 3 Barros came out strong and was able to land his jab on the inside and get out of the way of the taller Perez. Barros fought on the inside and was able to land his uppercut and keep Perez from landing anything of significance early in the round. Perez did enough to win the round

In round 4 Barros again fought on the inside but Perez stepped back and landed 2 solid uppercuts to the body. Barros stepped back and Perez connected with 2 solid left hands, Barros continued to fight on the inside and work the body. Perez finished with a right hook to the head of Barros.

Round 5 Perez came out strong landing his jab followed with a left hook. Barros wasn’t able to get on the inside long enough to land a solid punch, Perez finished strong.

Round 6 Perez stayed on the outside and was able to land his jab at will. Barros wasn’t able to get in close enough to land anything solid. Perez stayed on the outside and landed his jab at will and finished strong.

Round 7 Perez stayed on the outside, Barros missed his punches not being able to get in close, Perez landed a solid right; Barros had Perez on the ropes but Perez covered up enough to avoid most of the punches. This was a close round. Barros landed a solid uppercut in close and had the better round.

Round 8 Barros missed with wide lopping punches; Perez landed clean solid jabs early in the round. Barros fought in desperation trying to get in close but wasn’t able to land anything of significance; Perez did enough to carry the round.

After the eighth and final round the fight went to the judge’s scorecards: 77-75, 78-74 and 80-72 all for the winner by unanimous decision Alex Perez.

Alex Perez improves his undefeated record to 12-0 with 7 KO’s while Edvan Barros falls to 10-10 with 7 KO’s.
