Froch vs. Abraham on October 2nd – News

By Dan Ambrose: The venue and the stage for the stage 3 Super Six tournament fight between former World Boxing Council super-middleweight champion Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham has finally been decided after countless weeks of negotiation. The fight will now be held on October 2nd in Monaco.

Froch, 33, refused to fight Abraham in his adopted country of Germany, believing that he had no chance of winning a decision if the fight were held there. And Abraham, for his part, wanted no part of fighting Froch in his home city of Nottingham, England, perhaps after having seen Froch win a controversial, some would gift, decision over American Andre Dirrell in the first fight of the Super Six tournament for Froch.

While the location of Monaco might satisfy both fighters to an extent, it will likely hurt ticket sales to the fight for both fighters, because their fans will have to travel a long distance to see them fight. How many fans will end up making trek is unknown, but it will be interesting to see how many fans eventually show up and who has the bigger fan base for the fight.

Both Froch and Abraham lost their last fights in the Super Six tournament. Froch was beaten by Mikkel Kessler by a 12 round decision loss in Herning, Denmark, whereas Abraham lost by a 11th round disqualification to Dirrell in March in a fight where Abraham clubbed Dirrell with a hard right hand after Dirrell had slipped on the canvas and fallen down.

Froch feels he should have won the Kessler fight, but few fans and sports writers agree with Froch. Because of the loss, Froch has been especially concerned about the venue for his next fight and about the judges. The thing is with the power that Abraham has in both fists, judging may not be needed for this fight.

It could end up being all a big waste of time for Froch with his worrying about the venue, because Abraham could end up knocking Froch out like he did Jermain Taylor in his first fight of the Super Six tournament.

Froch has poor defense and has a bad habit of fighting with both hands down by his waist. He gets hit a lot and the style doesn’t seem to be working for Froch, at least on the defensive side of the game.

Abraham says: “I can’t wait to get back in the ring. I am thrilled that the date and venue have been set. I must admit that the disqualification against Dirrell still haunts me. Only a victory over Froch can put my mind at rest.”

This fight figures to be one of the more exciting bouts of the Super Six tournament because of the two styles of the fighters. Both Froch and Abraham love to slug and tend to load up with everything they throw. Abraham hits harder, but he tends to hold off on his offensive until late in each round. Abraham can’t afford to get behind in this fight like he did in his loss to Dirrell in March.
