The Blame Lies with Mayweather

Image: The Blame Lies with MayweatherBy Giancarlo Malinconico: Manny Pacquiao has agreed to all of Floyd Mayweather’s demands from the first round of negotiations in early 2010. Pacquiao has agreed to the 14-day cut off point for random blood testing that Mayweather demanded, which had been the only point of contention between the two until “Money” had recently demanded a 60/40 purse split in his favor, which all but guarantees that the fight will never happen. Manny did not look for common ground, but he accepted all of Floyd’s original terms.

And ever since Mayweather defeated the 38-year-old, well-past-his-prime Shane Mosley, many in the media have unconditionally taken Floyd’s defense. The most vocal supporter has been Tim Smith, who has written articles as if he were a casual boxing fan and Floyd’s personal public defender, citing some unidentified sources. But has the win over Mosley really changed much, or has it been exploited by Mayweather? Fans, let us remember that Mayweather is the same fighter who avoided a fight with Mosley when he was the pound-for-pound champion almost a decade ago.

And Pacquiao had more pay-per-view buys in his knockout stoppage of Miguel Cotto in November of 2009 than Floyd did in his one-sided win over Juan Manuel Marquez. But Pacquiao did not ask for a bigger share of the revenue because he knew it would hurt the chances of the biggest bout in boxing history from taking place. Then, Pacquiao fought the relatively unpopular Joshua Clottey, who was a tougher challenge than the old Mosley, but it did not change the Pac Man’s status from remaining the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, and it hasn’t stopped him from rightfully winning Fighter-of-the-Decade.

Boxing writers ought to be putting the pressure on Mayweather for not accepting the terms put forward because Pacquiao has agreed to all of Floyd’s previous demands. Mayweather fought Mosley, but this is the second time that Floyd has backed down from facing the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound champion.

The majority in the public are wondering, now that Pacquiao has conceded to almost all of Mayweather’s initial demands, where are the articles pressuring Mayweather to accept the fight or retire? If the fight does not happen, there is only person to blame — “Money” Mayweather.
