By Eric Thomas: IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green (29-3, 26 KO’s) will be facing fellow Australian Paul Briggs (26-3, 18 KO’s) in his next fight on July 21st in Sydney, Australia. Briggs has been out of action for the past three years since 2007, and will likely look it against Green. Briggs, 34, was twice beaten by Tomasz Adamek at light heavyweight in 2005 and 2006.
Briggs’ last fight was against Rupert Vas Aswegan in February 2007, beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant IBF Australian light heavyweight title. Briggs was still fighting at a very high level at that time and it’s unclear why he hasn’t been back in the ring until now.
Green, 37, stopped Manny Siaca in the 3rd round in his last fight in April 2010. Green basically mowed Siaca down with power shots and was too powerful and big for him. Before that, Green shockingly stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the 1st round in December 2009. It was a great win for Green, as he went out fast, walked through a few shots from Jones and put him down with a lopping shot to the temple.
Jones got back to his feet but was met with a storm of punches and the fight was quickly stopped when Jones couldn’t fire anything back at Green. Since that fight, Green was hoping to get a fight against Bernard Hopkins. However, he hasn’t shown much interest in fighting him.
