Image: Cotto-Margarito II a possibility for December 4th on HBO PPV – NewsBy Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that there’s a possibility that World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) will be fighting a rematch against Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) on December 4th in a bout that would be shown on HBO pay per view. Apparently, Top Rank promotions, the company that promotes both Cotto and Margarito, are in discussions with HBO for the December 4th date.

However, there are a number of things that could mess this fight up and take it away entirely. To start with, if the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao mega fight doesn’t get put together, then will likely use Cotto or Margarito as a substitute for Mayweather for Pacquiao’s next bout in November. Cotto obviously would be more than pleased to get a rematch against Pacquiao, because he got the biggest payday of his career by far in his 12th round knockout loss to Pacquiao last November.

There’s also the chance that their promoter will put Cotto in with unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next in order to get an easy money fight for Cotto. It would make sense, because Margarito could end up destroying Cotto again, and that would end the gravy train for the time being you would think for Cotto and Arum.

By knocking out Chavez Jr. first, Cotto could then tackle the much harder fight against Margarito next. And this all rests on whether Chavez can get by John Duddy this Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. If Chavez Jr. doesn’t win that fight, then Cotto vs. Margarito will be looking much better. But Margarito also will need to get his boxing license back to fight in the United States.

Margarito still hasn’t got his license back after it was revoked last year in January. If he can’t his license back, then there won’t be a Cotto-Margarito rematch. Margarito has served his year suspension, so there’s a t least a possibility that he’ll get his boxing license back. However, the fight is less interesting as it was before because Margarito was easily beaten last year by Shane Mosley, and looked nothing like his former dangerous punching self in his recent 10 round decision win over Roberto Garcia on May 8th. Margarito looked like a finesse fighter in that bout, and showed little power.

In his previous fight with Margarito, Cotto lost by an 11th round TKO two years ago in July 2008. Cotto dominated the fight for the first nine rounds, using an in and out attack to score punishing shots to the head of Margarito. However, Cotto moved far too much than he was accustomed to doing, and failed to clinch to get rest breaks. His trainer should have slowed Cotto down and told him clinch Margarito when it became apparent that Cotto wearing down in the 2nd half of the fight.

However, Cotto continued to move constantly until getting caught at the end of the 10th round on the ropes and badly hurt by a big uppercut from Margarito. In the 11th, Cotto had nothing left and was easy prey to the big uppercuts from Margarito. Cotto made it easier for Margarito by laying against the ropes and leaning forward, as if he was begging to be hit by an uppercut from Margarito.
