Image: Margarito wants bout with PacquiaoBy Dan Ambrose: It’s not surprising that Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) now wants a fight with Manny Pacquiao after beating Roberto Garcia (28-3, 21 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Plaza Monumental, Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. Due to his hand wrap scandal, you would think it’s impossible for Margarito to get a fight with Pacquiao. However, he stands a very real chance of getting a fight with Pacquiao if the Filipino’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t materialize. Margarito’s bout against Garcia drew over 17,000 fans this weekend.

With that many fans showing up to see Margarito fight an obscure fighter, a bout between Pacquiao and Margarito could draw huge numbers in Mexico. It would probably have to take place in Mexico unless Margarito somehow gets his boxing license back in the United States. It’s possible, but there’s also a chance that Margarito might not get it back soon. In an article by Rick Rockwell at Examiner.com, Margarito said “Pacquiao is known as the Mexican Assassin, but he hasn’t fought this Mexican.

This is a fight that my country people want. They know that I will beat Pacquiao and strip him of that title.” I think it would be a better fight than the recent Joshua Clottey vs. Pacquiao, but I don’t believe Margarito would have a chance to beat Pacquiao. Margarito didn’t look any faster than he was in his last fight against Shane Mosley a year ago. I think he looks even slower than he was back then. Margarito has become more of a boxer now and used less slugging in his fight with Garcia. He still would have huge problems with the hand speed and power of Pacquiao.
