Cintron-Williams: Does anyone want to see a rematch?

Image: Cintron-Williams: Does anyone want to see a rematch?By Chris Williams: I can’t say that I’m all that interested in seeing a rematch between Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KO’s) and Paul Williams (39-1, 27 KO’s) after watching last night’s insane ending of their fight at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Even though the fight ended suddenly when Cintron fell between the ropes and injured himself after falling on ringside table, I’m not interested in seeing the two fighters go at it again.

The ending was just weird. Cintron seemed to dive between the ropes like superman after tripping over Williams’ leg. Some people think that Cintron wasn’t hurt at all and was more embarrassed than anything. I have no idea what the issue was, but I the fight was completely boring until the 4th and I think I would rather see these two fighters go in a different direction than fight again. Both fighters looked tentative for the first three rounds and the crowd really hated it. There was booing in the 2nd and 3rd round, but it didn’t do much to get the fighters to take many chances. This is the second strange fight I’ve seen involving Cintron.

Last year, Cintron appeared to be knocked out from a left hand in his fight with Sergio Martinez. However, Cintron got up and argued to the referee and convinced him that he had been head butted. The referee, who didn’t see the action, gave in and left Cintron continue the fight. Oddly enough, the missed call wasn’t overturned after the fight, meaning that Cintron was able to get a gift draw when he should have been knocked out. In the Williams fight, Cintron might not have known that the ringside doctors are quick to stop a fight when there is any sign of a fighter being injured while falling out of the ring.

The doctors are not going to take any chances and going to pull the plug on the fight rather than wait around. Cintron was hoping to be allowed to continue fighting, but given how long he spent laying face down on the ground, it pretty much left the doctor little choice but to stop the fight.
Both fighters lost on Saturday. Williams may have won the fight by a 4 round technical decision, but he didn’t do anything to endear himself to the boxing public with his performance in the fight. He didn’t really start fighting hard until the 4th round, and unfortunately the bout ended just when he was getting started.

Cintron wasn’t active enough in the fight and seemed far too economical with his punches. But by falling out of the ring, it’s caused speculation from some fans that Cintron was faking. I don’t see what there would be too gain if the guy was faking, other than getting sympathy and maybe a no contest. I don’t think Cintron would be foolish enough to do something like that, so he must have been really hurt. As far as a rematch goes, I think the fighters should forget about that and look elsewhere for fights.

Williams is hoping Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. will show interest in fighting him. I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was Williams. Luckily for him, he’s open to moving among the welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight in search of interesting fights. He may need to, because there are not a lot of options available for him at light middleweight unless he can get a rematch with Sergio Martinez or a fight against Alfredo Angulo.
