Mayweather vs. Mosley: Expect a boring bout

Image: Mayweather vs. Mosley: Expect a boring boutBy Chris Williams: I’m hoping that this Saturday’s fight between Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather erupts into an action-packed bout with fireworks all the way through it, but I’m remembering Mayweather’s recent fights and I just see this one being a dull bout with not enough action to live up to the big expectations that boxing fans have for it. Mayweather, 33, doesn’t like to exchange with his opponents prefers to pick his spots to land single punches.

Mosley will be playing the part of Ricky Hatton by attacking Mayweather all night long and trying to pressure him. Mayweather will be good at landing the single shots but he’s not going to risk throwing combinations because this will allow Mosley to get in close enough to connect with his power shots. Mosley will be trying to get into a war with Mayweather, but the chances of that happening are slim and none.

Mayweather will probably land short punches as Mosley comes in close and will grab him in a clinch once he’s on top of him. In the meantime, Mayweather will circle the ring, jab and throw pot shots all night long. His work rate will be low, the dull and probably not worth the money for the pay-per-view bout. Mosley is good when a fighter is standing right in front of him, but very beatable when facing a fighter that moves and jabs well like Mayweather. I don’t think Mosley’s skills are made for a fighter like Mayweather. I expect Mosley to struggle against Mayweather as much as he did in his first fight with Vernon Forrest in January 2002.

I don’t much interest in the undercard. Welterweight prospect/contender Saul Alvarez (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) will be fighting Jose Miguel Cotto, the brother of former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Jose is moving up in weight to take the fight and won’t have the power to compete. Even if Cotto was a welterweight, I think he would get his head torn off by Alvarez. But this is going to be a slaughter. Alvarez hits too hard, is bigger and will be going right hand happy all night long.

Other fights on the card are Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Cornelius Lock in featherweight action. This, again, is another one-sided fight. De Leon has too much power and will be all over Lock, punishing him for as long as this fight lasts. Hector David Saldivia will be facing Said Quali in welterweight action. Not interested in this fight. I would have preferred seeing Daniel Jacobs fight.
