Mayweather-Mosley: Two very different men fighting for one very similar reason

By Peter Wells: This Saturday night we will all witness the biggest fight of the year so far, and if neither of these fighters take on Manny Pacquiao then it’ll probably be the biggest. Boxing doesn’t get much more recognition off non boxing fans than this, and why not, this is huge and to have the top 3 pound-for-pound fighters in 1 weight division is just brilliant.

Documentaries like 24/7 only make people more interested in the fight, and for me I’m about as excited as the fighters themselves. Being British for the David Haye fight, I felt more nervous than David himself and can now imagine how the fighters must feel the week of the fight. Time can never go fast enough when you have something to look forward to.

For me it’s a 50/50 fight, and choosing a winner is close to impossible for me, and I couldn’t be even 51% sure that my prediction is correct. The build up for fights like these are usually more exciting than the fight, especially in Mayweather’s case. But I can’t criticise Floyd, he is an amazing fighter with a rare talent and when in the ring should use that talent. He may be boring but why trade with fighters and lose when you can play safe and use your amazing abilities to win the fights. I defiantly know that if I had Mayweather’s talents, I’d use them.

Mosley has his own talent and like Mayweather uses it, he has a more fan friendly style but still has magnificent speed. He hasn’t got a brilliant record against fighters like Mayweather, with speed and great counter punching. Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright have both beaten him twice, and fighters like Margarito and Vargas are made for Shane. They come forward trying to wear you down, and Mosley loves that, that’s when his speed and power come into play. I can’t necessarily judge him on his defeats because sometimes having a bigger goal or bigger reason to win sometimes makes the most average of fighters great. Being the fight of his life he has a hell of a lot more to fight for and will be fighting like he’s back in his prime.

Mayweather is the kind of guy that likes the bad boy impression, and it suits him well, and he’s defiantly no ‘Rocky’ fan. But Mayweather is for real, he’s a nice guy out of the ring, he’s caring towards him family, and has a very close knit family who are always together in and out the gym. He does what most of us would if we had that kind of money. Spend it on the luxuries in life, like a mansion and flashy cars. Ok, he can over the top a lot, he takes a lot of rubbish, but it’s all to promote the fight. If people don’t like him so much why pay for his fights. You know why? Because he sells his fights by trash talking, and making the fight sound better than it is.

On the other hand, Mosley is a completely different guy all together. He likes to be the quiet one, likes to keep himself to himself. He may not have all family in his gym, but he is very close to his team and other fighters in his gym. He is also training his son, Shane Mosley Jr, and his son is very appreciative of having a fighter like Shane giving him first hand advice. Mosley is still here for the love of the sport and is a tremendous guy; he takes risks and doesn’t say no to a fight like this one.

Both fighters are inspirations to the sport, they both have legacy’s they can be proud of, and done great things in the sport. Mayweather is doing his fair share of cleaning up the sport, which is a good thing; it should always be done, even though I highly doubt that Pacquiao is on anything. Both fighters are fighting for their legacies, to enhance them; this is the fight of their careers and neither wants to lose that. The other thing they are both fighting for is the obvious one…

…a shot at Manny Pacquiao.
