Image: Kessler vs. Froch: Look for knockout win for MikkelBy Toby Gibson: On the 24th of April, the most hyped and anticipated fight of the whole Super 6 will take place. Unbeaten world champion Carl Froch will travel to Denmark in order to try to take out former world champion Mikkel Kessler. This is seen by many as THE fight of the Super 6. Ever since Carl Froch beat Jean Pascal for the vacant WBC title, talks of a match with Mikkel Kessler have been circulating. This is a great opportunity to see these great warriors fight and is one match I believe should have happened in 2008/2009.

I for one believe Carl avoided Mikkel. Instead of fighting Kessler, he chose to arrange a fight with Lucian Bute but later took on former middleweight Jermain Taylor. Taylor was mandatory but turned down the fight twice. So, why not Kessler? Kessler was the number one in the division at that time and WBA champion; Taylor had no title and little rep in Super middle. Carl was involved in verbal sparring with Joe Calzaghe, would it have been easier to send a better message to him by beating Kessler instead of Jermain Taylor? This time around, there is no choice for Carl.

My prediction for this fight is Kessler by a knock-out. I firmly believe that Carl Froch’s style is tailor made for Mikkels, that’s why I believe Carl avoided him. Mikkel Kessler’s style for one will cause Froch problems. Carl Froch has his hands down very low and always comes forward. For somebody like Kessler, who punches in straight lines it will be easy to land his punches, especially when Carl just walks in. In this match, Kessler won’t be able to miss. He already punches accurately and has good movement, so Carl will be a punch bag in there. Carls throws his hooks very wide, a way of taking advantage of this is straight punches. That’s Kessler’s favoured way of punching – straight rights, jabs. A good example of this was the fight between Bernard Hopkins and Calzaghe where Hopkins was able to knock Calzaghe off balance and avoid some power shots hitting with their full power by throwing straight rights whenever Joe threw a wide hook.

Kessler’s style and rhythm is easy to predict and figure out when you’re an elite boxer like Joe Calzaghe or Andre Ward. They managed to adapt to Kessler’s style and because of this Kessler was clueless. That’s the “blue print” to beat him. Unfortunately, Froch does not have this ability, so how can he beat Mikkel? Mikkel has only ever been beaten by boxers. Carl is not a boxer – he is a brawler. Carl gets his confidence by the world saying Kessler is a has-been and not the “Viking warrior” we all came to know. The reason for my knock-out prediction is Froch has been dropped by a blown up middleweight in Taylor and badly rocked against Andre Dirrell, especially in round 10. What will happen against the hardest hitter in the Super 6 Mikkel Kesser?

Kessler is not a has-been; he will be back come 24th April. The great Roy Jones Jr is a part time rapper in his social life and penned an infamous song called “Ya’ll must have forgot”. In this song he reminds us of his achievements, who he has beaten and what he is capable of. To me, I think this song could be the foreseeing of Kessler vs Froch. Kessler has had bad publicity and everyone seems to write him off after his high profile loses. ‘Ya’ll must have forgot’ that Mikkel Kessler held two world titles and went 39 fights unbeaten. ‘Ya’ll must have forgot’ that Mikkel Kessler was the favourite to win the Super 6 and was considered by most to be the hardest hitting super middle in the world. ‘Ya’ll must have forgot’ he was number one in the division. Until the 24th April, people will be given a grim reminder of how dangerous and underrated Mikkel Kessler is, in terms of power, speed, agility, aggression, killer instinct, movement and defence. Expect an exciting fight with an upset, Kessler K.O anytime after round 4.
