Every winner is a loser

By Adam Fillingham: Hmm how shall I do this? Cup of tea in one hand, biscuit in the other. Now I need to type with something…

Anyway my article. I have been writing and reading this article for quite some time and today whilst aimlessly doing absolutely nothing I came to a conclusion. Every winner in the eyes of boxing fans around the globe are losers.

I came up with a few examples just to put my point across and see what you think. This could end badly.

David Haye

David Haye is the Unified WBO, WBC and WBA WORLD cruiserweight champion. He is now the WBA heavyweight champion of the world. He is a TWO weight world champion and yet still he has doubters. Many fans say he has a week chin and/or very little durability. David Haye hasn’t been down to a heavyweight punch and have you seen the size of those guys?!

Back at cruiserweight David Haye was number one. He had knocked out the veteran Jean Marc Mormeck in seven rounds. He was the WBA and WBC world cruiserweight champion. He was number one. Number two was fellow Brit Enzo Maccarinelli. He was world champion himself with the WBO title of his own with four defences of his title against good (not great) opposition. People were tied on who would win as both were fantastic fighters. The fight ends and David Haye destroys Enzo in two rounds. Does Haye get credit? Nope. Maccarinelli has a “suspect” chin or was “overrated”. Not what they were saying before the fight.

Haye swiftly moves up to the heavyweight division and fights top twenty heavyweight Monty Barrett. Everyone expected Haye to win but some people did think Haye’s chin wouldn’t hold up against a “top 20” heavyweight. Haye destroys Barrett in just five rounds and Barrett is “past it” and was “never a top 20” heavyweight.

David then fought for his first world title in November last year. He fought the seven foot giant Nikolay Valuev ranked in the top 5 of the world and the WBA WORLD champion. Yes I agree the “man” was overrated but he was 7ft tall for Christ sakes. A lot of people before the fight thought that Valuev would win the fight. Did he? Nope, Haye ran rings round him and fought a smart game plan to earn a close Unanimous decision. Does he get credit? Nope, Haye “ran round for twelve rounds” and “Valuev was overrated”.

Can you see the pattern emerging? This didn’t really happen in the Ruiz fight as most people thought David would defeat the 38 year old.

So if Haye continues to fight who will he get credit for? If he defeats Wladimir Klitschko, Wladimir will have a week chin. If he defeats Vitali Klitschko, Vitali will be old and past it. If he defeats Tomasz Adamek, Adamek will be too small. If he defeats David Tua, Tua will be too old, or too fat. If he defeats Povetkin, Povetkin is unproven. You see where I’m going. There is nothing he can do to prove his worth if he is worthy of being number one that is.

My second and final example is the God like substance that is Manny ‘Pac man’ Pacquiao.

The man has done everything possible. He has won SEVEN world titles in SEVEN different weight classes. Nobody in the history of boxing has ever accomplished that. Yet the man still has doubters. People on his back day in day out, calling the man a fraud as he doesn’t fight the best.

Manny Pacquiao has defeated a legitimate Welterweight in Joshua Clotty. Not one that’s moved up in weight, not one that’s down to a catch weight. A legitimate Welterweight. And he still gets called as Clotty lost his last fight to Miguel Cotto. He won his WBO welterweight title against the best welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Very few knew who to back. Many said this was his first legitimate welter and he Pac would lose. But he didn’t. He tore one of the best fighters on the planet to pieces. The man was covered in blood and yet fans of the sport still got on his back? How can this be?

Before that fight was Ricky Hatton. Hatton was back on for after his lost to Mayweather and again it was 50/50 who would win. I myself thought Hatton would win. Pacquiao knocked Hatton out in TWO rounds. TWO rounds. He destroyed the best light welterweight on the planet in two rounds. And yet after the fight after saying the fight was 50/50 most fans now say Hatton was past it in the first place.

There is no need for me to go on really. I could carry on but what is the point. You must get the picture by now.

I hope you have enjoyed this article and remember this is only my point of view, not British people on the whole so please no stereotypes in the comment section.
