Hopkins still wants to fight Haye

Image: Hopkins still wants to fight HayeBy Jim Dower: After laboring to a dull 12 round unanimous decision against 41-year-old Roy Jones Jr. last night at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, the 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins said “I still want to fight David Haye.” As bad as Hopkins looked against Jones, and believe me he looked bad, I think Haye would literally make mincemeat of the 45-year-old Hopkins.

It’s hard to believe Hopkins can really give himself much of a chance against the bigger, younger 29-year-old Haye. Hopkins struggled at times last night against a shot looking Jones, and appeared to be suffering the after effects off getting hit in the back of the head by Jones in the 6th. Hopkins complained of seeing spots and collapsed in his dressing room after the fight.

Hopkins did not look good against Jones, looking slow, clinching often and looking his age. It would be scary the Hopkins that fought last night being in the ring with a big puncher like Haye. It’s even harder to imagine boxing fans being at all interesting in seeing a mismatch like.

Hopkins has a good following among fans, but it would be asking a lot of them to want to see him face a knockout artist like Haye. Hopkins might just want to get another big payday before he rides off into the sunset and hangs up his gloves for good. However, his performance against Jones last night doesn’t suggest that he would have much of any chance at beating Haye. Hopkins, besides being old, is probably far too small to be much more than a punching bag for Haye. Even if Hopkins were to clinch Haye after throwing every punch, he would still likely take a ferocious beating.
