Time for Dirrell doubters to eat their humble pie

Image: Time for Dirrell doubters to eat their humble pieBy Scott Gilfoid: For all the critics of Andre Dirrell, who predicted him being beaten by Arthur Abraham last Saturday night, it’s time for you all to eat some crow for your wrong predictions. I hate to gloat, but I have to say I told all of you that Dirrell was going to win and do it in a dominating fashion. Was I right? I can spot talent from a mile away and that’s why I predicted that Dirrell would put on a boxing clinic against the Joshua Clottey-like Abraham.

Anyone with two eyes could have seen what I saw if they had just sat down and watched a half dozen of Abraham’s fights. Of course, I’ve we way more than that. I’ve sat through at least 10 of Abraham’s fights, and seen enough to know how limited and one dimensional a fighter he is. I knew he had power. I never questioned that. But his hand speed, work rate and ability to move around the ring has always been atrocious. He moves like ape around the ring with clam shell guard held up high in front of him, and always wastes valuable time conserving energy just covering up.

So I told all of you that Dirrell was going to win, and I ended up being completely correct. I didn’t think Abraham was going to lose his head and tee while Dirrell was on the canvas, though. But I did expect Abraham to start fouling when things got bad. I’ve seen Abraham foul like crazy in his other fights, so I expected that to happen. The kind of fouls I’ve seen from Abraham in the past range from throwing elbows, like in his fight with Jermain Taylor, rabbit punches, low blows, holding and hitting and shoving.

The ones that I’ve seen Abraham use most of the time are elbows, rabbit punches and holding and hitting. The elbows are easily number #1 in the way of fouls I’ve seen from him. Surprisingly, I didn’t see one elbow from him against Dirrell. The problem that Abraham had in that fight is that he couldn’t get near Dirrell all that often, and when he did get close enough to throw punches, Dirrell easily got out of the way of them because of Abraham’s painfully slow hand speed.

The dude was just too slow and way too short. And it was sad to see Abraham melting down in the 11th and fighting like a wild man. He had no time for anything that point and I guess when he saw the opportunity to land a nice free shot while Dirrell was on the ground, Abraham went for it.

But back to the subject of eating crow. I was right, and I’m gloating in the victory. I told all of you Dirrell would win, and sure enough he did. I would have been right with my prediction in the Froch-Dirrell fight if the bout had taken place outside of England. I think that was an awful decision and I guess Dirrell would have needed to knock Froch cold to win the fight on that night. But that’s okay, because Froch will end up probably losing his next two fights against Mikkel Kessler and Abraham and end up getting drummed out of the Super Six tournament. In the meantime, the talented Dirrell will beat his next opponent Andre Ward and then move into the semi finals.

Dirrell made Abraham look entirely limited all fight long with his hand speed, movement, jabs and especially his straight left hand. Dirrell even dropped Abraham once in the fight, and should have had a second knockdown if the referee Lawrence Cole had his eyes open when Dirrell nailed Abraham sending him falling against the ropes. Without the ropes there, Abraham would have been on his back again.
