Image: Froch not worried if Calzaghe helps KesslerBy Nate Anderson: World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KO’s) isn’t concerned whether Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) ends up helping his April 24th Super Six tournament opponent Mikkel Kessler. In an article at ESPN, the 32-year-old Froch says “Calzaghe was no man enough to fight me and maybe feels a bit more secure whispering in another fighter’s ear than taking my punches himself. He never had the bottle to fight me, so how can he know how to beat me?”

It was reported yesterday by the Danish news site dr.dk/sporten that Calzaghe had offered assistance to Kessler in helping him get ready for his bout against Froch on April 24th. Kessler said he’d be interested in getting any help or advice from Calzaghe that he could give him about Froch.

Calzaghe never fought Froch, but he would still be an excellent choice for help because of Calzaghe’s extensive boxing knowledge. Calzaghe has an uncanny ability to dissect opponents and find out their weak points and then attack it. Calzaghe is well familiar with Froch’s fighting style having seen many of his bouts in the past. He would obviously be a great help for Kessler if the Danish star is really open to having him assist for this fight.

It used to bother Froch that Calzaghe, while he was still fighting, never showed any interest whatsoever in fighting Froch, despite Carl having an unbeaten record and sharing the same weight division. While Froch was knocking out one opponent after another, Calzaghe instead was facing the likes of Jeff Lacy, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr., Peter Manfredo Jr. and Mikkel Kessler late in his career.

In fairness to Calzaghe, the public interest just wasn’t there at that point in Froch’s boxing career for Calzaghe to want to fight Froch. The money fights were against Jones, Hopkins, Lacy and Kessler. Froch still hadn’t built up the kind of name at that point for a fight between Calzaghe and him to be a big success. However, by the time that Froch gets through with the Super Six tournament, depending on how well he does, he could then be a big enough star for a fight between Calzaghe and him to be huge in the UK. Regrettably, Calzaghe is retired now, so even if Froch ends up winning the Super Six tournament, a fight between Froch and Calzaghe would seem remote.
