By Jason Kim: International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Brian Viloria (26-3, 15 KO’s) was hospitalized last night after collapsing in the dressing room following a 12th round TKO loss to Colombian Carlos Tamara in Manila. Viloria controlled the fight through eight rounds, landing effectively with powerful quick combinations. However, Viloria began to fade by the 9th round and started to take heavy shots from the challenger Tamara.

It was pretty clear that Viloria was gassed out from setting too quick of a pace for the fight during the first eight rounds. Viloria was okay as he walked back to his dressing room after the fight. However, soon after arriving, Viloria suddenly collapsed and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for observation. Viloria reportedly received a CT scan of his brain and a chest x-ray. As of now, Viloria is in stable condition.

Viloria looked exhausted in the 12th round of Friday night’s fight against Tamara. The fight was stopped after Tamara staggered a tired looking Viloria and teed off on him while he tried to cover up on the ropes. It was all one way traffic leading to referee Bruce McTavish to step in and stop the fight at 1:45 of the round. This was Viloria’s 2nd defense of his IBF title which he won against Ulises Solis last year in April.

It’s still too early to know whether Viloria will have any lasting problems from this stoppage. It could be that Vilroia was just tired from having fought really hard in the fight. However, Viloria did absorb a lot of punishment to the head in the fight, especially in the later rounds when Viloria totally ran out of gas.
