By Sam Gregory: Tonight’s opening bout at Tingley Coliseum, Albuquerque, New Mexico on ShoBox featured local favorite undefeated Archie Ray Marquez 9-0 with 7 KO’s who tested his undefeated record against the gritty Derrick Campos 20-7 with 11 KO’s from Topeka, Kansas in a scheduled eight round bout in the junior lightweight division.

Marquez took control of this fight from the opening bell landing his stiff jab and following it up with a combination to the body that didn’t give Derrick Campos much of a chance to execute his game plan.

Marquez’ six inch reach advantage served him well and held Campos at bay through much of the early rounds of the fight.

The 18 foot ring proved to be even more of a problem for Campos making it difficult for him to cut the ring off on Marquez who easily dictated the offensive flow of the fight throughout.

Through the middle rounds Marquez was able to get his jab off and follow it up with combinations that only frustrated his opponent as the fight progressed.

Campos tried to get in close on his opponent leading with his head but Marquez’ reach advantage only served to frustrate the Kansas native even more.

By the sixth round Campos began letting his hands go throwing a flurry of punches only a few of which found there mark.

Campos was able to step up his pace by the 7th round but nothing he landed seemed to bother Marquez at this point who was clearly ahead on the scorecards.

In the 8th and final round Campos came out throwing everything he had but it proved to be too little to late as the hometown favorite coasted to an easy victory.

After eight rounds the fight went to the judge’s scorecards that read: 79-72, 80-71 and 77-74 all for the winner by unanimous decision Archie Ray Marquez.

Marquez improved his unbeaten record to 10-0 with 7 KO’s, while Campos fell to 20-8 with 11 KO’s.
