Jones interested in a rematch with Green

By William Mackay: Roy Jones Jr. (54-6, 40 KO’s) is interested in getting a rematch against International Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Danny Green (28-3, 25 KO’s), who stopped Jones in the 1st round on Wednesday night at the Acer Arena, in Sydney, Austalia. Jones said in an interview with Fox News, “I was good by the time the referee stopped the fight. if he was going to stop it, I wish he would have stopped it earlier then he he did stop it, because by the time he stopped it, I was okay then.” When asked if Jones would be interested in fighting a rematch with Green, Jones said “Yes, most definitely.”

Jones was supposed to be fighting Bernard Hopkins next in March 2010, a fight that would have likely given them both a big payday. However, the 1st round knockout loss by Jones will probably alter those plans, because boxing fans might not be interested in seeing Jones and Hopkins fight now that Jones has been so easily defeated.

Hopkins, 44, is saying that he still wants to fight Jones, because Roy was stopped on his feet rather than taken out on the canvas. Jones was knocked down by a big right hand in the 1st while trapped in the corner. The shot that hit Jones appeared to land on the side of his head nearing the back of the head. Jones made the mistake of cringing and turning his head to the side as Green was throwing a shot. It was a bad move to do because it opened up the entire side of Jones’ head leaving him vulnerable for Green’s big right hand shot.

After getting hit, Jones collapsed to the canvas and rolled over and dragged himself to his feet after several moments looking hurt. Green then launched a flurry of unanswered shots while Jones attempted to cover up and block the punches. Some of the punches were blocked, but many of them connected to the head of Jones over a 20 second period.

Finally, the referee stepped in and stopped the bout when it seemed that Jones wasn’t going to start throwing punches anytime soon. There was still a full minute to go in the round and it’s hard to imagine that Jones would have been able to last out the remainder of the round taking the kind of one way punishment he was absorbing at the time.

Jones had to have known that Green was going to try and take him out as fast as he could, because this was a fight in front of Green’s home crowd and the arena was sold out with a loud pro-Green crowd. Jones was fighting okay for awhile, but he made the mistake of backing up into the corner and trying to cover up on the ropes.

This is how Jones’ has fought in the past five years since he started slowing down. Often times, Jones would make the mistake of lying up against the ropes and taking big punishment. Glen Johnson stopped Jones in the 9th round in their fight in September 2004 when Jones was backed against the ropes. It looks like Jones didn’t learn his lesson from that fight.

Jones would be better off not fighting a rematch with Green, however. Green is too big and too powerful for Jones to have any success with. If they were to fight again, I see the same outcome occurring with maybe Jones lasting a round or two longer before Green catches up to him.
