Why is Dmitriy Salita ranked number one by the WBA?

salita343By Liam Santiago: I have tried time and time again to try and figure out why Dmitriy Salita is the number one contender for Amir Khan’s World Boxing Association title but I can not, for the life of me come up with any reason. Boxrec have him ranked 60th in the light welterweight class. Yes, 60th! This guy does not stand a chance against Amir Khan. Not because Khan is great, because Salita is way below average. He has been dropped more times than Khan and that is saying something!

This kind of situation is what is very bad for boxing. I am all for an easyish first defence but this is just pathetic. Maybe Khan should take a look at fellow British champion, Carl Froch, who took on middleweight legend, Jermaine Taylor in his first defence. That was a very risky fight to take but it was one the fans wanted to see and it paid off for the Cobra.

I am simply confused as to how a guy who is generally ranked around the 60 area of his division can become the number one contender for one of the four main titles. Salita can not even knock Khan down. To put Salita’s quality into simple text, he is ranked 40 places below British champion, Lenny Daws, by Boxrec. And Amir Khan wonders why the boxing fans are not taking a great like to him. Take on a decent challenge Amir! Do what Ricky Hatton and Carl Froch have done. Don’t shy away from the big tests.

I do not want to hear any of this crap about how Khan is only 20 or whatever age he is. If he is capable of becoming champion, he must take on the best.
