Where Is Pacquiao’s head? – Boxing

pacman1By Jamie Hooper: After seeing the last two HBO Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7 episodes I was left thinking that there was something very different about Manny Pacquiao. He is no ordinary fighter. His huge support from the Philippine people has turned into a huge responsibility. As his country is hit my a natural disaster his instinctive desire is to help.

Which is obviously a very natural thing to do. He has been meeting with Philippine government officials and politicians during training camps. This isn’t new for him as I believe he has desires to move into politics when his boxing career ends.

But want I have noticed about him is that the shear magnitude of what is happening in the Philippines is dwarfing his boxing ambitions. When Freddie Roach interrupted a meeting Manny was having with a politician, Manny looked at Freddie very dismissively like anything training camp related was rather insignificant.

This is all very normal an what you would expect from anyone who loves there country and now feels a growing responsibility for it. But this has been the mother of all distractions when it comes to his preparations for Cotto.

His early sparring sessions have been reported as being poor. On 24/7 we get a snippet of his sparring obviously any comments on what we got to see would be highly speculative as he could have been working on anything. But Freddie wasn’t happy with what he saw, having to remind him that he was training for his biggest fight since Marquez.

This is in stark contrast to the confidence emanating from Freddie Roaches face during the training camp for the Hatton fight. Manny seamed 100% focused and razor sharp in sparring.

Freddie finally gets Manny back to the wild card gym. Freddie almost instantly looks a lot happier and Manny seams to have finally turned his full attention to the fight in hand.

As far as I see it. Manny has had a training camp where he has been massively distracted for the first 6 weeks then giving it 100% for the last 2. If he ends up loosing to cotto at least there will be no shortage of excuses.

I would have much preferred to see Manny in the same sort of camp that he had for the Hatton fight. But I think mannys head is in places far bigger than boxing and he no longer has Freddie Roach on the same pedestal that he was once on in the early days.

I think Manny should remember that he uplifts his countries spirit’s the most my winning.
