khan63568By William Mackay: A bout between lightweight Breidis Prescott and super featherweight contender Kevin Mitchell is reportedly being set up but no date as of yet, according to the latest boxing news. This would figure to be a very tough fight for the brawling 5’8” Mitchell, because he’s shown to be very hittable in his six year pro career. Prescott, 5’11”, would have a huge reach and power advantage over the shorter, weaker Mitchell.

I think Mitchell would be lucky to make it to the 6th round against a big slugger like Prescott. Mitchell is a great fighter for the super featherweight division, although I don’t see him as a championship caliber fighter fight now. But in putting him against the lightweight Prescott, I think Mitchell might be an even easier opponent for Prescott than Amir Khan proved to be. Prescott, for those who may not be aware of, stopped Khan in the 1st round last year in September.

Thus far, Khan hasn’t chosen to avenge his defeat to Prescott. Mitchell, however, would seem to be an even more tailor made opponent than Khan, simply because Mitchell goes right after his opponents trying to knock them out. Mitchell would have to change his style in a big way for him to have any chance against Prescott. Mitchell won’t have the reach needed to box Prescott from the outside, and will be forced to come at him to land his shots.

Prescott is dangerous with his wide hooks and will be a huge problem for Mitchell when he comes inside trying to land his shorter punches. Mitchell looked less than impressive in his last fight, an 8th round stoppage win over Rudy Encarnacion in July 2009. Mitchell was hit often by Encarnacion and showed little defense in that fight. Mitchell is going to have to fix his leaky defense before being put in with Prescott.

That would be like having Mitchell walk the plank on a pirate ship having him fall into the water where a big shark would be waiting for him in the form of Prescott. I respect Mitchell’s management for wanting to put him in with Prescott, because it will get Mitchell a great deal of attention, win or lose. However, I don’t think Mitchell has the size, power or ability to beat a fighter like the hard punching Prescott.

But then again, Mitchell will have equal problems against the top super featherweight champions Humberto Soto, Robert Guerrero, Roman Martinez and Juan Salgado. I wouldn’t give Mitchell much if any chance of beating any of them.

Prescott, ranked #10 in the World Boxing Organization and #14 in the International Boxing Federation, has done precious little since his victory over Khan last year. Prescott defeated Humberto Toledo by a 10th round disqualification in February 2009, and then was defeated by Miguel Vazquez by a 10 round split decision in July. Prescott was thoroughly out-boxed by Vazquez in that fight and was never able to land his shots with any regularity.
