“Bad” Dawson wins by unanimous decision over Johnson

By Sam Gregory: In tonight’s main event on HBO World Championship Boxing undefeated southpaw Chad Dawson and 40 year old Glen Johnson will fight the rematch of their fight from 19 months ago that Chad Dawson won but some people thought Johnson should have been given the nod.

Tonight’s rematch is for the interim WBC light heavyweight and IBO light heavyweight belts in a scheduled 12 round bout.

Round 1 Dawson came out circling and jabbing; Johnson threw some combinations that were blocked, Dawson ate a right hand from Johnson and didn’t throw back. Dawson started being conservative with his punches and conserving energy for the later rounds. Dawson was in total control and easily won this round.

Round 2 Dawson came out again throwing his jab and landing it at will. Johnson was able to get in a little closer in this round and was having a better round. Dawson landed 3 solid right hands and ended the round with a flurry of punches that again easily won the round.

Round 3 Johnson came out aggressively but Dawson blocked his punches. Mid way through the round Dawson landed 2 good combinations with excellent hand speed. Dawson again landed his jab and blocked a couple combinations from Johnson. At the end of the round Dawson let go with a flurry of punches, Dawson won the round.

Round 4 Dawson kept circling and landing his jab at will. Dawson was the aggressor for most of the round, Johnson wasn’t nearly as aggressive. Dawson was able to get in, land his punch than get back out. Johnson really looked outclassed, Dawson dominated the round again.

Round 5 Dawson came out circling landing his jab; Johnson threw combinations that were blocked, Dawson threw 6 and 7 jabs that he landed with ease. Johnson fought with more intensity and had his best round putting more pressure than in previous rounds.

Round 6 Dawson circled than came straight at Johnson landing his jab, Johnson began landing his jab and a solid right to the body. Dawson stood in front of Johnson and traded punches, Dawson got the better of the exchange. Johnson was more aggressive but Dawson came back strong in the last half of the round. Johnson possibly won the round with the shot he landed to Dawson

Round 7 Dawson mixed his body shots with the jabs, Dawson was totally dominating the round and dominated the offensive flow of the fight. Dawson’s counter punches of Johnson’s jab landed with accuracy and carried the round.

Round 8 Johnson came out circling but Dawson had him off balance and landed an uppercut to the body; Dawson was very aggressive and landed solid shots to the body. Dawson did more pawing with his jab than anything but it was enough to again carry the round.

Round 9 Dawson came in fast and landed 2 solid body shots; Johnson tied up and Dawson punched out; Johnson threw and landed a combination to the body. Dawson took control of the round and used his balance and accurate jabs to dominate the round.

Round 10 Johnson came out covered up waiting for Dawson’s jab; Dawson landed the jab and circled. Dawson timed his punches and landed at will. Johnson moved forward and tried to apply pressure but Dawson was too fast and beat Johnson to the punch every time. Dawson won the round.

Round 11 Johnson came out circling Dawson threw and landed his jab; Dawson threw several combinations that he landed. Johnson threw his jab but didn’t seem to have anything left on it at this point in the fight. Johnson did keep moving not totally giving the fight to Dawson.

Round 12 Dawson came out hard throwing his jab, Johnson circled and threw body shots that mostly were blocked. Johnson spent most of the round running. Dawson landed his jab at will. Johnson didn’t seem aggressive enough to even look like he needed to win the round. Either way Dawson won the round.

After 12 rounds the fight goes to the judge’s scorecards: 115-113 on 2 cards and 117-111 for the winner by unanimous decision Chad Dawson.

Chad Dawson improves his undefeated record to 29-0 with 17 KO’s. Glen Johnson fell to 49-13 with 33 KO’s.
