Boxing: Jermain Taylor – Take a Bow

tay56By Richard Gough: Any other boxer with a record of four defeats (3 knockouts) and one win (points) from his last five fights would be urged to retire as a spent force.

Not Mr Jermain Taylor. The man is an enigma, draws crowds, generates hype, gets us talking and makes us wish for him to do well. He is a solid boxer, with the most open and visible flaw, he can’t compete in the championship rounds.

Would he have lost to Carl “The Cobra” Froch if he could have kept going? The answer is no. Would he have let one sneak past his guard against Arthur Abraham? Again, the answer is no.

Going into the Super Six, I had a sneaky suspicion that the dark horse for the tournament was Taylor. As a pure boxer, he was in my opinion the best out of the super 6’s. He out boxed Froch, put a man on his arse who had not been there either as an amateur or pro.

But how many chances does Taylor need to justify the huge amount of potential he has? I think now, his chances have run out. The massive and devastating knock out loss to Abraham should make Taylor think that one more fight might be one too many. He should relax, and then retire, and would be yet another boxer who could have been so much more. But this is not a slight on him, he took on the best, won some and lost some. If only all boxers had the same attitude, boxing in general would be in a much better state.

As for the Super 6, the Sho (time) must go on. Replace Taylor with Allan Green and move forward. And hope that the tournament continues to deliver as it has so far.
