Woods: “One Thing I Have Never Done is Quit on My Stool Like Witter”

woods44568By William Mackay: Former International Boxing Federation light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods unloaded on Junior Witter today in an article at Thestar, saying “”He’s [Witter] the most boring boxer around. How many people would pay to watch him? I have had more fans in just one of my shows than he has had in his entire career.”

Woods, 37, is upset with some comments that Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) made with the Thestar in which Witter said “He’s [Woods] not the most naturally gifted boxer. He’s gutsy but he has taken a lot of shots.” Woods, who recently fought and lost a tough 12 round decision against Tavoris Cloud, one of the hardest punchers in the light heavyweight division, said “One thing I have never done is quit on my stool like Witter did. That was really embarrassing.”

Woods, of course, is referring to the quit job that Witter did in his last fight against Devon Alexander on August 1st. Witter quit on his stool after the 8th round, complaining that his left arm was injured and that he couldn’t use the arm to fight or protect himself sufficiently.

At the time that Witter quit, he looked to be fighting moderately well and was using his left arm to both block and land punches. With only four rounds to go in the fight, there are some boxing fans and experts who feel that Witter quit on his stool rather than toughing it out in the last four rounds of the fight against the young 22-year-old Alexander.

Boxing fans at the fight in the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, California, were none too pleased with Witter quitting on his stool in between rounds, and showed their displeasure by singing a long chorus of “Witter the quitter.”

Woods had more to say about Witter: “How many people would pay to watch him? I have had more fans in just one of my shows than he [Witter] has had in his entire career.”

With both Witter and Woods showing what appears to be dislike of each other, it’s too bad that they’re so far apart in size, because this would be the perfect grudge match. However, Witter fights at welterweight now (147), and Woods has always fought as a light heavyweight at 175 pounds.

It’s probably far too much weight between them for the two of them to settle things in the ring unless the Witter and Woods could meet at a catch weight of 160. It’s doable but Witter would probably get hammered out in a round or two under the best of circumstances.
