Roach Wants Pacquiao to Fight Mayweather Before Retirement

pac4543By Manuel Perez: It looks like Manny Pacquiao is really interested in trying to become a politician. I wish him a lot of luck. His trainer Freddie Roach said this to GMA News: “I would like (Manny) to finish with beating Mayweather.” Finish with beating Mayweather? What is that about? Pacquiao hasn’t even fought Miguel Cotto yet and already Roach is having visions of Mayweather. Someone needs to wake Roach out of his reverie and delusions of grandeur. Pacquiao is going to be picking up his teeth on November 14th when Cotto sends Pacquiao packing his bags for his political career.

Pacquiao won’t need Mayweather to do that for him. Cotto will do it quite nicely. If Pacquiao and Roach still want to face Mayweather after Cotto takes care of him, then that’s on him. I don’t think the boxing public will want to see it after Pacquiao losses to Cotto, but who knows?

There’s a lot of ignorant people who might not even get the word about Pacquiao’s loss against Cotto and see him as the real thing still. I can’t blame Roach for wanting Mayweather to be Pacquiao’s last fight before he retires. That makes a lot of sense because Pacquiao is going to get taken apart piece by piece by Mayweather and knocked out. Retirement would then be the perfect thing for Pacquiao do.

He’d have two losses in a row and would be all but finished as a fighter. Oh, I can see Pacquiao scurrying away and moving back down to the super featherweight division and ruling there, just as long as Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t follow after him. But I doubt Pacquiao wants to fight at super featherweight after having tasted the big bright lights of the welterweight division.

He’d go back to the super featherweight division where it would like a ghost town in comparison to the big stars at welterweight. But what can you do? The Mayweather and Cotto fights won’t be close enough for a rematch to be called. Those are both going to be one-sided losses for Pacquiao.

I suppose Pacquiao, Bob Arum and Roach can twist another rematch out of Cotto and Mayweather. The boxing public would probably go for it if Mayweather isn’t beaten too badly by Cotto and Mayweather. But the way I see it, Pacquiao is going to get knocked out by both of them, so a rematch won’t really be needed.

It’ll be a miracle if Pacquiao, Arum and Roach can even arrange a bout against Mayweather. Those guys want the bigger cut of the revenue and Mayweather isn’t going to go for that, especially if Pacquiao comes into the fight having been badly beaten by Cotto. Pacquiao will need to take a smaller cut like 40%. Mayweather is the star here, not Pacquiao.

The negotiations will probably evaporate quickly when Pacquiao’s team asks for equal or greater amount of the purse. Mayweather will do the right thing and take a walk and fight Shane Mosley instead leaving Pacquiao to contemplate what to do next.

The good thing is that Marquez will be waiting for him and will jump right on that fight and they can get it on at either lightweight or super featherweight. This is a fight that boxing public would want to see because of questionable 12 round decision Pacquiao won last year against Marquez. I saw the fight, as did many other boxing writers, and I had Marquez winning by at least two rounds.
