fury562335By Steven Wain: Tyson Fury (8-0-7 KO’s) beat John McDermott (25-6-16 KO’s) today by a 10 round decision (98-92) for McDermott’s English heavyweight title. However, the fight was not one way traffic as the score card seems to show. Quite frankly, I had it the other way round to McDermott.

The fight started off at a fast pace with McDermott getting to the punch first, throwing solid jabs and pushing inexperienced Tyson Fury on the back foot. The tides turned in the middle couple rounds when Tyson began to land some big punches, but was still getting caught by McDermott.

In the final round, McDermott once again came on strong while Fury looked like he had been running the London Marathon for the last 3 hours.

At the end of the fight nearly every boxing fan, even me, was expecting the referee Terry O’Connor, to raise the hand of John McDermott, but to everyone’s surprise he took hold of Fury’s hand, and gave him the victory and in turn handing him the English Heavyweight Championship

Ignoring the result and what happened, I asked myself what did I learn from Fury’s tonight. The biggest thing was that he defiantly has a chin. He took some heavy shots from Big McDermott but he was never really “hurt.” One more thing that I learned about Fury as a boxer is that he has guts and determination.

Whatever you though of the decision, the record will still say the same and that is that Tyson fury is still undefeated and has now captured the English Heavyweight Championship.
