Fury defeats McDermott: The day British Boxing died…

fury4532445By Gavin Bridges: Tonight, quite happy with myself for having two days extreme over-exertion in the house of a real freind, Mr. Glen Binns I so thank you, I returned home to settle myself down for the English Heayweight Title bout between the much-vaunted Tyson Fury, and John McMuffin, sorry, McDermott.

See, even the most evenly biased of us get caught up in the PR machine that accompanies most bouts. So, regular refreshments to hand, I tune in to see the ‘Mini-Klitschko’ turn up to do a number on his opponent. So what went wrong?

From the first bell, MsDermott negated the reach and pace advantage of Fury, scant regard for the blows ‘Tyson’ threw (and I continue to struggle to use his name in pugil circles with worthy justification)

At no stage in the fight did Fury seem to be the genuine aggressor of sorts, a lack of fight experience and stamina evolving as an Achilles heel, always being repelled and out-done by the abrasive, neanderthal, yet effective style of his opponent. At enough stages of the fight did the younger, taller traveler of the two seem to lose ‘comput mentus’ and fade physically, as the ragged workman carried onwards aplomb.

Then the twelfth. Arm punches thrown from Fury, solid blows from McDermott, who as the round wore on became further and further the aggressor, failing Fury’s corner insistence that they needed a KO, and after further assault the bell rang…

The fighters met..

And Fury’s arm was raised.

Always I believed ‘preferred’ winners were the bastion of the way more money-oriented markets of the ex-colonials, ’til now. The BBBC, once the flag-bearer of morals within the sport, condone PPV morals. I hope they are proud. I hope, I really hope, they are ashamed. WBBBC anybody?
