By Liam Santiago: There seems to be more and more boxing critics hyping the 19th September showdown between Marquez and Mayweather as a heart vs skill battle. Yes, Marquez has a massive amount of desire to win, he is a true warrior. And Mayweather does have amazing skill but he also has a huge heart. Recent reports say he is training like a beast.
Of course, it helps the promotion of the bout. The Warrior vs the slickster always generates great interest. But, the fact that ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ has not often in an all out war, where he can demonstrate his desire to win, does not mean he has not got the true heart of a warrior. Sparring partner’s have said Mayweather is training like a contender, with all the fire and desire of a warrior.
The fact the floyd makes no attempt to hide his desire to earn money does not help this false identity that he has no heart. Of course he want to earn money. Everyone does. People see Mayweather as a fighter in boxing for the money alone and could not produce what a true champion could if he needed to. This idea mainly comes from the fact that he is ‘money Mayweather’. But as I have said all boxer’s want lots of money. Ricky Hatton does, starting promotions and all sorts of companies. Oscar de La Hoya does. They all do.
Mayweather may not have had to display his heart too often, but I can assure you, it is certainly not lacking.
