Witter Forced to Quit, Campbell Furious at Decision – Boxing Results

By Liam Santiago: Junior Witter has said he will not retire after quitting against unbeaten American, Devon Alexander. Witter injured his elbow in the early rounds and simply could not use his arm whatsoever. Although, the fight was either man’s for the taking, the Sheffield ‘Hitter’ and his corner agreed to pull out. Witter tried constantly changing his stance and changing his style but nothing worked. The injury preventing him carrying on.

Devon showed a good jab throughout the bout and surprised me with his power, stunning Witter on a few occasions with left hooks and straight right hands. His attacks were good but Witter also looked good. In the early rounds his jab was effective and as usual he presented himself as a very tricky opponent for Alexander. Witter took some massive shots and had to hold on more than a few occasions. The referee warned Witter for this and threatened to deduct a point if he continued. As the bout went on and Witter’s injury grew worse, the Hitter was simply throwing a single punch and holding on. At that point, we all knew it was over.

witter4232After the bout, Devon was very emotional ; even in tears. This was the moment he had waited for since the age of seven. Witter’s career is not over, however, and if he wants to look at the positive side of the result, it might lead to a fight with Manchester man, Ricky Hatton. Both coming of defeats, maybe it could happen. Ricky Hatton is currently resting after losing to Manny Pacquiao in a bout which he was mentally of his game and physically past his peak. So, both fighters have lost, but not as a result of their quality as a fighter. Would Witter beat Devon next time? Maybe. Would Hatton beat Pacquaio next time? Yes, I am sure.

campbell3423On the same card was Timothy Bradley vs Nate Campbell. Bradley won after Nate pulled out due to being blind in one eye from heavy set of head buts. The fight was stopped in the third round, so, technically the bout should have been ruled a no contest.

That’s boxing for you. Nate made his thoughts known after the fight and so did promoter Don King. The pair agreed on a rematch there and then but this should defiantly have been a no contest. The fight was held in California, Campbell’s hometown, so maybe this should be expected. Bradley did look the more effective in the first couple of rounds, but fights are not won over the first couple of rounds. I am very disappointed at the referees decision, considering he could see the head but replays on the big screen before making his decision.
