corley4534By Sam Gregory:The April 10th edition of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights from the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona featured David Lopez vs Ossie Duran in the main event of a six-bout card. The first fight on tonight’s card is a scheduled four round fight in the Jr welterweight division featuring Rudy Valdez 2-3 against undefeated Karl Dargan 3-0.

Dargan was the bigger faster fighter and used his combinations to the body to dominate the first two rounds of the fight. In the third round Valdez turned to the southpaw stance in a desperate attempt to keep himself in the fight but Dargan had an answer for everything Valdez tried to change the direction of the fight. In the fourth round the undefeated Dargan stepped up the pace to close the show as referee Wes Melton called a halt to the bout in 2:16 of the final round. Dargan was the winner by TKO.

Karl Dargan improved his record to 4-0 with 2 KO’s; Rudy Valdez fell to 2-4.

The second bout on the card was a Jr welterweight fight between undefeated Hector Sanchez 14-0 and the 34 year old southpaw DeMarcus Corley 33-1 in a scheduled eight round bout.

Corley showed his experience in the first round using his jab and dominating Sanchez throughout the round. Corley suffered a cut under the right eye in the first round. Sanchez seemed to get his bearings by the second round and got himself back in the fight winning the round. Corley dropped Sanchez in the third round with an uppercut, Sanchez survived the round.

By the fourth round Coley was able to dig in and land the more solid shots. The taller Sanchez was tested throughout the middle rounds and never had an answer for the southpaw style of Corley and fell farther behind in each round.

In the fifth and sixth rounds Corley was able to get inside and neutralize the right hand of Sanchez. Corley landed solid shots to the body and controlled the middle rounds of the fight.

The seventh round was uncharted territory for Sanchez never having gone past six rounds in his previous fights. The experienced Corley moved inside, fired his jab and got back out.

Going into the eighth and final round the fight was fairly even and was either man’s fight to win. The eighth round was back and forth and a very even round.

At the end of the fight it went to the judge’s score cards. The scores were 77-74 on all three cards for the winner by unanimous decision Hector Sanchez.

Hector Sanchez improved his unbeaten record to 18-0 with 8 KO’s; DeMarcus Corley fell to 33-11 with 19 KO’s.
