Miranda Interested in Fighting Froch

miranda35353535By Dave Lahr: Well, you can add Edison Miranda (32-3, 28 KOs) to the long list of fighters that are interested in fighting WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Miranda is so interested, in fact, that he’s invited Froch to come watch his fight with Andre Ward next month on May 16th at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California.

In a press release from today, Miranda even goes so far as to say that he’ll take care of getting a ringside seat for Froch and will fly him over to the United States for Froch to watch him fight Ward. Two things here: One, Miranda must really feel confident that he’ll be able to beat Ward next month, because that’s a lot of money to shell out for nothing.

And the other things is Miranda is clearly got it bad for Froch, and really wants a fight with him. If Miranda can beat Ward, it will put Miranda in a great spot to get fights against Froch or other big name fighters in the super middleweight or light heavyweight division.

A bout against Froch would be huge if Miranda can get by Ward in one piece. That’s a big if, though, because a lot of boxing fans are predicting that Ward, a former 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, beats Miranda next month. Although I don’t like Froch’s chances against super middleweights like Mikkel Kessler and Lucian Bute, I think Froch would do well against Miranda.

If Froch’s chin can hold out, I think he’d have a good chance of wearing Miranda down with his steady pressure, heavy shots and beat him into the canvas in the later rounds of the fight. I doubt that Froch could score a midpoint knockout like Kelly Pavlik was able to do against Miranda, because I see Froch as slightly weaker and slower than Pavlik, but I do thing he’s more than powerful enough to wear Miranda down beyond the 10th.

My only question would be whether Froch’s chin could handle the big shots being aimed at him by Miranda. Taylor was able to hurt Froch badly last weekend, knocking him down in the 3rd round and giving him big problems by landing flush right hands and left hooks.

Miranda, however, punches even harder than Taylor and he doesn’t tire out like Taylor does. This would mean that unless Froch could somehow learn to protect himself from getting hit so often, he would be in serious danger of being knocked out by the power punching Miranda.

At any rate, it’s going to be a long shot that Miranda can even get past Ward, let alone try to lure Froch into a fight. Froch can almost pick and choose whom he wants to fight at this point, with even Bernard Hopkins reportedly being interested in fighting him.

Froch needs to take the biggest fights he can while he’s still unbeaten and in possession of his WBC super middleweight title, because I don’t see Froch holding onto his title for long once he steps it up against better fighters than Taylor.
